Understanding Sets and Reps

Most workouts are defined by sets and reps. Here's what that means.

A set is a series of repetitions (reps) of an exercise done in sequence.

Reps is short for repetition. A rep is a single movement of any exercise.

You might do push-ups for 3 sets of 10 reps with 30 seconds rest between sets.

In Other Words...

  • 10 Push-Ups

  • 30 Seconds Rest

  • 10 Push-Ups

  • 30 Seconds Rest

  • 10 Push-Ups

  • 30 Seconds Rest

Also, you might see instructions such as 3x5 of bench press.

In this example, 3x5 means “three sets of five reps of bench press.”

The # of Sets will always be stated first.
